Secure Your Mask First

I had always been intrigued when the flight attendants tell you to secure your mask before helping others. I thought that made a lot of sense until I had children. First time I flew with my children they were 20 months and 10 weeks old. As the crew went through their safety information I thought to myself, “I would put the masks on the kids before I put one on myself.” I thought about this for a long time and realized I needed to take care of myself first before I could help them.

It’s an amazing realization in life. So many of us are struggling with our own difficulties but are trying to help others at the same time. God has shown me over time that I need to take care of myself before I can help others.

I often meet women who are not taking care of themselves. Not only are they struggling, but their families are struggling. No one is healthy. Many women do not realize their spiritual and emotional health carries a great weight with their families. I know that sounds like a lot of pressure but it’s true.

You might ask, “what can I do?” The first thing you should address is your spirit. Are you walking with God? Do you read His word? I know it can be hard to take time to spend alone with God, but it can be done. We have to get our priorities in order. There are things that can be put off for another day. Take some time to look at your schedule. Building intimacy with God takes time, you have to prioritize.

The next thing you need to do is take care of your physical health. Are you caught in the rut of eating your child’s leftovers? Do you skip meals because it’s too much work to make something? I have been there and understand how hard it is to sit and have a healthy meal. I know it’s one more thing to do, but you have to take care of your body. I know it’s easier said than done, but you have to start somewhere. Start with some exercise and when you are doing that consistently then move on to working on your eating.

When it comes down to it you need to realize that you need to “secure your mask first”. If you are not breathing you can not help others. Once you have “secured your mask” you will be open to helping your family and friends. You will be happier and you will see the fruits in those around you. Read Acts 1:8, God is with you, pray and ask Him to help you as you grow in Him. He will give you what you need to achieve this goal.
