A Month of Giving

We love to December.  My birthday is the 21st and Rob’s is the 22nd, so December becomes a month long celebration of birthday’s.  In 2011 we decided we wanted to spend the month giving to others.  We would give money, time, material possessions and discipleship.

Our church helped launch the idea with their annual: Be Rich campaign.  In 2010 we read Luke 18:22 and took it to heart.  We sold material possessions and did a loan through World Visions micro loan program.  It felt great to read God’s word and obey as a family.  In 2011 we ran into another verse that prompted our mission for December.  1 Timothy 6:18 tells us to do good and be rich in good deeds, be generous and be willing to share.  I think that pretty much says it all,  with that said our family had it’s assignment plain and simple.

Everyone was very excited to participate in the month long project.  We were always on the lookout for ways to give of what we had as well as purchasing for others.  Our family was very glad to have done it and we feel privileged to have the opportunity to give of the bounty that God provides for us.

We pray that others will be encouraged by what we do and participate in some way with their families.  Let us know what you do in December, who knows you may inspire our next family project.

What is Your Parenting Style?

In recent news much has been made of a Chinese woman’s book about superior parenting. Amy Chua writes about how she raised her two daughters. She goes on to explain that her style, “the Chinese way” was better than any other way.

Once I got over my anger at her outrageous statements I realized I needed to take stock of my own parenting style. We live in a country that allows parents the freedom to parent their children in almost any way they choose. The government does not tell us how to raise our children. Many even have the option to home school their children, like we do.

I gave much thought to this idea of a parenting style and I realized it comes down to what do I want the outcome to be? I know all parents want the same thing for their kids, “we just want them to be happy and healthy”, that’s what may parents say. But what does not mean?

I want my kids to be disciples of Jesus. If Rob and I accomplish anything as parents, it has to be that. We want our children to want to please God more than they want to please us. We want them to forget about trying to please the world. It truly does not matter to my what my children decide to do with their lives as long as they make much of God and not themselves. Discipling, that’s our parenting style. We need to ask ourselves, is this going to lead my child into continually growing relationship with Jesus?

What do you want for your children? What is your parenting style?

3 Steps To Overcoming Fatigue

We all have too many things on our plate right now.  We all get tired and we all need help overcoming fatigue.  We are all at different seasons in our lives but we can put these 3 things into practice to help us help our families.

1. Eat the right foods

You have all probably heard about sugar highs, those are accompanied by sugar crashes.  When you have too much sugar it raises your blood sugar levels.  Although this may seem good at some point you will experience a “crash” in your blood sugar levels, causing exhaustion.  I love fresh fruit, it’s a great sweet kick when I feel like eating something sweet.  I like chocolate and candy just as much as the next girl, but I only eat it after I have had fruit or protein to offset the sugar rush.  I like to make things easy on myself so I keep pre sliced apples on hand.  I was my grapes right when I get home from the store and cut them into small bunches so I can just grab a few and take them with me.

Is Your Body A Temple?

You’ve probably heard someone at some point say, “your body is a temple”.  This statement comes from the Bible, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.  The verse tells us our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, we are not our own.  So what is a temple?  There are several uses for a temple, here are three.

1. A place of worship

We use our bodies to worship God.  This is a very difficult undertaking.  Worshiping God with our bodies means we need to take care of ourselves.  We must eat right, exercise and get enough sleep.  I know what your thinking, you think there is not way I can do all those things with what I have on my plate right now.  The question is, do you want to worship God?  If the answer is yes then we need to say no to some things in order to take care of ourselves.  We need to treat our bodies with respect and compassion.  We can worship God more freely when we’ve taken care of His temple.

Asperger’s Syndrome: An Inside Look

Our family has dealt with Asperger’s Syndrome for over 8 years now. You would think we know it all by now, but we don’t. Just when we think we completely understand something, we realize we don’t. We continue to learn each and everyday about this syndrome.

God has opened the door for us to talk to others about what it is like for us as a family to deal with this. We have been blessed beyond measure through this experience. Asperger’s Syndrome is not just hard for the person but it is hard for those who love them.

As the insiders it can be devastating until you realize that God is in control. God created them this way for a reason. We fully trust God, we know He has a plan that will glorify Him. There are still times we question and we do still mourn losses at times.

It all comes back to the fact that God has always been faithful to us, we must be faithful to Him. In due time this will all make sense either in this life or the next. God will not hang us out to dry. He has always provided for us and He will continue to do so.

Asperger’s Syndrome is not a sprint it’s a marathon. We are in a for a long haul but we continue to pray for ways to glorify God through our troubles. Asperger’s Syndrome is welcome to be a part of our family but it can not take control of it.

Elijah is doing so well right. We can really see God working in Him. The progress he is making right now is immeasurable. It is so cool to be a part of this and we thank God for making us “flies on the wall” of His work.

Language Learning

Have you ever tried to learn another language? I am currently trying to learn German. I grew up speaking both English and Spanish. I learned both languages at the same time but language learning can be difficult for many people.

Asperger’s Syndrome can be like language learning for those who struggle with it. Asperger’s makes it difficult to read social situations. Those who struggle with this syndrome have to learn how to navigate everyday social situations.

We have had to teach our son the same social concepts nearly everyday. It is hard for him to understand how our social “language” works. On the other hand it is hard for us to understand their world as well. We have been working on educating those around us in the last 8 years. If we can come to understand their world then we may be able to make this world better for them to understand.

Asperger’s Syndrome can be devastating when you have to learn the social “language” everyday over and over. We need to work towards not just helping those with Asperger’s Syndrome navigate our social world, but we need to educate those around us. Let’s stop and think twice before judging someone, they may just be learning our social language.

Spiritual Inventory

An inventory usually takes stock of what you have and don’t have. Stores, businesses and factories take inventory. But we can also use inventories to take stock of our spiritual lives.

We start our inventory by looking at what we have. Look at your family, friends, home, job, children. You can also look at your possessions, your talents and even your relationships. You won’t probably be surprised with what you come up with for these inventories. Most of us know what we have in these arenas.

Sometimes we start to look at all the things we have and we start to think we have done alright for ourselves. We think we have done all this for ourselves. We are wrong to think we got everything we have on our own.

When we start to take stock of what we don’t have then we will really be surprised. We can soon realize that we don’t have it all. Take stock of your security, happiness, contentment, patience, trust and peace. What do you see? Is this inventory list empty, or do you have some of these on the shelf?

Sometimes the things we don’t have tend to outweigh the things we have. We know we don’t have a right standing before God. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father is suffering. Don’t let pride get in the way, take inventory of the right stuff. God wants to have a relationship with you don’t shut him out.

Asperger’s Is Not A Joke

I like to download the free television programs on itunes for when I travel. Recently I downloaded a program called Community. It was a highly anticipated program that has received much acclaim. I had not had the opportunity to watch it so I downloaded it on itunes.

I started to watch the series premiere. The show was not really as advertised but I thought I would give it a chance and at least watch until the end, that is however until a particular scene on the show. One of the main character’s tells one of the other character’s he thinks he has Asperger’s.

The other character’s in the scene, including actor Chevy Chase, sit around making fun of Asperger’s Syndrome. The laugh and have a good time at the expense of those who suffer with this disorder. Needless to say I was beyond disgusted. I could not believe they were openly making fun of people with Asperger’s like this.

This was all amazing to me since the former CEO of NBC Universal’s grandson has autism. Is Bob Wright aware that his former network is making fun of not just his grandson but others like him? It is really amazing to me that something like this is ok.

Just because someone is different from us does not give us the right to make fun of them or the problems they struggle with. Please keep this in mind when choosing what programs to watch and support. Asperger’s Syndrome is not a joke, it is a serious problem that requires understanding from us all.

The Upside Of Asperger’s

I think I will try something new with my blog. I would like to help educate people about Asperger’s Syndrome, so every Wednesday I will try to give some insight into what it is like for our son and what you can do help those who struggle with Asperger’s Syndrome, like my son. I hope this raises awareness as well as sensitivity for those who are different from us.

A few years ago a friend asked me, “if they invented a cure for Autism would you give it to Elijah”, I thought for a moment and answered, “No”. That may sound strange to think I would not want my son to be healed from this disorder that torments him at times.

Let me explain myself. Elijah is a wonderful child, he has setbacks and struggles. He is a very loving and caring child. This is not a typical trait of Asperger’s Syndrome, usually they are not very emotional or empathetic people. Elijah on the other hand has always accepted hugs and affection from us.

I am thankful Elijah was diagnosed at such a young age. We have had privilege of early intervention. I think what we have been through with him has made us better people. Elijah has learned so much in the last 8 years. He really has come a long way.

I love him just the way God created him and I would not want to jeopardize what we have right now with the possibility of a “cure”. I think as Elijah gets older we continue to trust God with his life, we pray and we need to continuing putting his life in God’s hands.

We must trust God, because there is an upside to Asperger’s and God is showing it to us. We get the opportunity to help our son through life’s struggles with a different set of eyes. I do believe God has a plan for our son and we trust Him to continue to guide us through this maze of Asperger’s.

Biggest Loser (Or Winner)

I have to admit, I do not like “reality” shows. They always have a staged feel to them. I generally do not watch these shows at all, but I do make one exception. I watch The Biggest Loser. You wonder why I make an exception for this show. First of all I will say, I Tivo the show, this way I can zip through not only the commercials but through all the bickering and junk. That being said I think it’s a program that shows us a persons determination.

I think when people apply to go on the show, they are at their wits end with weight loss. They generally have tried everything and are ready to submit to someone they don’t know to help them lose the weight. What I find interesting about the show is why people lose the weight.

I don’t think it’s because of the immense amount of exercise they do during their stay. I think they lose the weight because while they are there they realize why they got to be the way they are, they realize why they want to lose weight.

I think we can apply this thought process in life. We set goals for our lives and when we do not reach them we get terribly frustrated. When we stop and think about why we are really doing something, it changes us.

When we know why, it will determine our accomplishments. Most contestants on The Biggest Loser tried and failed at losing weight because it was not something they truly wan. They did not understand why they wanted to lose weight. Once they are on the show they are asked why they want to lose weight. We learn that most of them want to lose weight for themselves, health, family, and for revenge.

I think Luke 6:48 shows us how we can make sure our whys always match up with God’s will. If our foundation is in God then all our whys in this life will be to bring God glory. Nothing will shake us or our goals in this life. Build your house on God’s foundation.
